We have just one question: why have skincare cosmetics and products become a permanent element of modern society? Our primal need to appear attractive to others is strong inside us. We wish to impress others with our spotless skin and to be admired for a charm that does not subside over time. That is why many cosmetic products that aim to help us in achieving this goal can be found on the market. However, there are some people where using cosmetics is more than a matter of creating an aesthetic impression. It is a serious matter, one that has a considerable impact on the quality of their lives. For such people, the inappropriate selection of cosmetic products not only causes discomfort but may also lead to real suffering.

This especially relates to those suffering from dermatoses – skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, conditions that can make life a nightmare. Humitopic dermocosmetics have been created with such people in mind.

Our story

Before we talk about what led us to creating Humitopic cosmetics, let us introduce ourselves. We are Kamila and Konrad, we are siblings, and we have always been passionate about research. That is why we associate not with sports but with science, bonding not with relationships but through chemistry – everything revolves around our scientific interests. It is this that led us to Sieniawa, a place where the oldest and smallest brown coal mine in Poland is located.

However, we came to Sieniawa not just because of our scientific interests. The local mine has been extracting coal in a sustainable manner for decades: not only without detriment to the environment but also with some benefits! The owners are immensely involved in regenerating the land left after open-cast mines by allowing it to be used for agricultural and forestry production, which makes our hearts smile. The soil that they give to farmers is of high quality – it is often higher than it was before the coal deposits were extracted. The regeneration measures resulted in the creation of Jezioro Ciche (Silent Lake), which has become a charming part of the local landscape and a place that has been willingly visited by fishermen since it was stocked.

We came here to continue revolutionising coal extraction and to find new possible applications for coal. As regards the latter, together with Rafał – a long-standing worker at the coal mine – we established Coalab, a small start-up looking for innovative applications for coal. While our team is still quite small, we are making up for this with our energy and the novel approach that we use when dealing with new challenges.

Our dermocosmetics

Where did our interest in cosmetics come from? The problem with eczema lies close to our hearts, which is where everything began. We struggle with dermatoses ourselves. Our conditions are mild, but even though they are only slightly nagging skin problems they allow us to understand what people suffering from atopic dermatitis or psoriasis have to struggle with on a daily basis. All the more so when we met Rafał, as we discovered that his son was suffering from a severe form of atopic dermatitis. That meant that he had to learn, even though not the hard way but by observing his son, how tough this condition can be and how much suffering it causes. Together we decided to search for a solution that would bring such people the relief they expect.

The next question was: how can we create a product that would be gentle and non-irritating but would provide a boost of hydration and help soothe fatigued skin at the same time? Searching for a perfect product for people with sensitive and reactive skin is quite a challenge. It is even more difficult as a great number of substances are dangerous – even seemingly harmless natural scent blends may sensitise your skin.

Ever more notebooks with formulas were being thrown into the bin. Just as we slowly began to lose hope, we discovered that the solution had always been in front of us: brown coal, more specifically the humic and fulvic acids extracted from it. It is those acids that we used to create our unique formula, known as H4topic-complex, which constitutes the basis for our Humitopic dermocosmetics line.

Why coal? Nature for our skin

Humic and fulvic acids are organic compounds that are omnipresent in nature. They can be found in peat, whose beneficial impact on life has been known for years now. It has antibacterial properties and it also regenerates the skin and the hair. Peloid (which is a type of peat), in turn, has been used for balneotherapy since antiquity.

Nowadays, we know that many such properties of peat can be attributed to humic and fulvic acids. However, peat does not contain much of them. Our innovative technology enables us to extract high-quality humic substances from brown coal. It is like we extracted the entire essence of peat that is relevant for your skin’s health. As such we have created dermocosmetics that are perfect for taking care of skin with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, as well as dry and sensitive skin.

After we had made this discovery, we enthusiastically began to conduct tests and studies that proved Humitopic dermocosmetics were safe as well as moisturising and strengthening for the skin. We enclosed our extraordinary discovery in simple packaging, without any redundant cardboard boxes or colourful prints. We are minimalists, and the content is what matters to us the most. It is the efficiency and quality of perfectly selected natural ingredients that is of the highest value. We avoid what is redundant, harmful and irrelevant for taking care of sensitive and dry skin, as well as skin with atopic dermatitis. That is why in Humitopic cosmetics you will not find aromatic substances, parabens, phenoxyethanol, SLS or PPD.

Humitopic was born out of the hope that we could help people struggling with eczema. We started in a small laboratory where we had complete supervision over the process of extracting humic acids and the unique particle called H4topic-complex.
